With many different genres, including narrative prose, wisdom poetry, psalmist poetry, prophetic prose and poetry, and legal prose, the Old Testament is as beautiful and refracted as light through a well cut diamond. In order to explore how the Old Testament testifies of Christ, I highly recommend the following books:
Sidney Greidanus, Preaching Christ from the Old Testament
Edmund P. Clowney, Preaching Christ in All of Scripture
Graeme Goldsworthy, Preaching the Whole Bible as Christian Scripture
Any serious preacher of the Old Testament would be well served by supplementing their library with these three books. In the upcoming blog posts, I will draw from Greidanus, Clowney, and Goldsworthy to suggest nine ways of preaching Christ from the Old Testament, summarizing them for you. They are: (1) theophanies; (2) redemptive-historical progression; (3) promise-fulfillment; (4) typology; (5) illustration; (6) analogy; (7) longitudinal themes; (8) contrast; and (9) New Testament references.
